OLD TIME HYMNS - Washington Bluegrass Gazette,
March-April 2000
Betty Jane Dodrill
"This CD is a collection of old time hymns done in old
time style. 'Power in the Blood' is a good instrumental. 'When
the Roll is Called Up Yonder' - this song is done in a very lively manner
with good old time banjo and harmonica. 'When We All Get To Heaven'
- the upbeat is quite pronounced with good old timey banjo playing.
'A Bit of Humor' comes to mind each time I hear this song. Growing
up in the Appalachia Hills of Virginia, this seemed to be a favorite, sung
each Sunday when I went to Sunday School as a small child. At one
time, the sheriff of the county was a gentleman by the name of Victor
Meade. The congregation would always sing as loud as possible, 'When
We All Get To Heaven, we will sing and shout to victory.' When we
got home from church, I asked my dad why we always had to sing and shout
to 'Victor Meade', as to a child's ear, the 'victoreeee' seemed to be
coming out Victor Meade! 'Softly and Tenderly' is complimented by
the harmonica and the old time zither sure fits with 'The Old Rugged
Cross'. A good gospel instrumental."
